And on a personal level, the classmates I had at Grace are now my guest speakers for courses. The cohort that is established at Grace, but then becomes a lifelong community, is very powerful and enriches the life of the artist. To me, the difference is participating in design, and some of that participation is being in community. It’s not just being in community to find a sense of belonging, but to be inspired, exchange knowledge, share tricks with programs, and explore other designers’ work. Some names are more prominent, but these collectives are crucial because ideas get passed down, and it’s important to have that inspiration and push forward, especially in such a subjective practice. Although these terms go hand-in-hand, there is a difference between them.

After visiting CalArts, it was initially the community that attracted me. As a little girl I wanted to be a painter, but soon realized that textiles and clothing were my medium. What I love about costume design–which is different from fashion–is that I am creating characters, parts of new worlds imagined by a writers, directors, set, lighting and sound... I was pitching ideas for shows while I was still a student at CalArts. It ran on Cartoon Network for many seasons and was cool because I got to make my own mini films. Alan S.
